Numbers 26

Moses counts the people again
26:0 The Book of Numbers began with a count of the people (Numbers chapters 1 to 4). This second count happened 40 years later.

1When the bad things and illnesses stopped, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar the son of Aaron, 2‘Count all the Israelites. Count in their clans all the men who are more than 20 years old. Count only those men who can join the army.’ 3So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to the Israelites. They were on the flat ground in Moab at the River Jordan. Jericho was on the other side of the river. They said, 4‘Count all the men who are 20 years old or more. The LORD has told Moses that we must do that.’ So these are the names of the Israelites who came out of Egypt:

5There was the tribe of Reuben, Israel‘s first-born son. Among Reuben’s descendants were the descendants of Hanoch and of Pallu. 6And there were the descendants of Hezron and of Carmi. 7Those are the clans of the descendants of Reuben. There were 43 730 men in the tribe of Reuben.

8The son of Pallu was Eliab. 9The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram were the men who did not obey Moses and Aaron. And they did not obey the LORD. Korah was their leader. 10The ground opened. Korah, Dathan, Abiram and their families fell into the hole and they died. And fire killed 250 other men. So they became a warning to the other Israelites. 11But Korah’s sons did not die then.

12There was the tribe of Simeon. Among Simeon’s descendants were the descendants of Nemuel and of Jamin and of Jachin. 13And there were the descendants of Zerah and of Shaul. 14Those are the clans of the descendants of Simeon. There were 22 200 men in the tribe of Simeon.

15There was the tribe of Gad. Among Gad’s descendants were the descendants of Zephon and of Haggi and of Shuni. 16And there were the descendants of Ozni and of Eri. 17And there were the descendants of Arod and of Areli. 18Those are the clans of the descendants of Gad. There were 40 500 men in the tribe of Gad.

19The sons of Judah were Er and Onan. But Er and Onan died in Canaan. 20These are the clans in the tribe of Judah. Among Judah’s descendants were the descendants of Shelah and of Perez and of Zerah. 21And there were the descendants of Hezron and of Hamul. 22Those are the clans of the descendants of Judah. There were 76 500 men in the tribe of Judah.

23There was the tribe of Issachar. Among Issachar’s descendants were the descendants of Tola and of Puvah. 24And there were the descendants of Jashub and of Shimron. 25Those are the clans of the descendants of Issachar. There were 64 300 men in the tribe of Issachar.

26There was the tribe of Zebulun. Among Zebulun’s descendants were the descendants of Sered and of Elon and of Jahleel. 27Those are the clans of the descendants of Zebulun. There were 60 500 men in the tribe of Zebulun.

28The descendants of Joseph became two tribes. Those tribes were called Manasseh and Ephraim.

29So there was the tribe of Manasseh. Among Manasseh’s descendants were the descendants of Machir and of Gilead. 30Among Gilead’s descendants were the descendants of Iezer and of Helek. 31There were also the descendants of Asriel and of Shechem. 32And there were the descendants of Shemida and of Hepher. 33Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but only daughters. And the names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. 34Those are the clans of the descendants of Manasseh. There were 52 700 men in the tribe of Manasseh.

35There was the tribe of Ephraim. Among Ephraim’s descendants were the descendants of Shuthelah and of Becher and of Tahan. 36And there were the descendants of Eran. 37Those are the clans of the descendants of Ephraim. There were 32 500 men in the tribe of Ephraim. Those last two tribes came from the sons of Joseph.

38There was the tribe of Benjamin. Among Benjamin’s descendants were the descendants of Bela and of Ashbel and of Ahiram. 39And there were the descendants of Shupham and of Hupham. 40Among the descendants of Bela there were the descendants of Ard and of Naaman. 41Those are the clans of the descendants of Benjamin. There were 45 600 men in the tribe of Benjamin.

42There was the tribe of Dan. Among Dan’s descendants were the descendants of Shuham. Those are the clans of the descendants of Dan. 43There were 64 400 men among the descendants of Shuham.

44There was the tribe of Asher. Among Asher’s descendants were the descendants of Imnah and of Ishvi and of Beriah. 45And among the descendants of Beriah there were the descendants of Heber and of Malchiel. 46There was also a daughter of Asher who was called Serah. 47Those are the clans of the descendants of Asher. There were 53 400 men in the tribe of Asher.

48There was the tribe of Naphtali. Among Naphtali’s descendants were the descendants of Jahzeel and of Guni. 49And there were the descendants of Jezer and of Shillem. 50Those are the clans of the descendants of Naphtali. There were 45 400 men in the tribe of Naphtali.

51There were 601 730 men on the list of the Israelites. 52The LORD said to Moses, 53‘I will give the land to the tribes. 54The big tribes will have a big piece of land. The small tribes will have a small piece of land. 55You must use lots to give land to each tribe. 56The larger tribes must have more land than the smaller tribes.’

57The list of the Levites included the clans of Gershon, Kohath and Merari. 58And it included the clans of Libni, Hebron, Mahli, Mushi and Korah. Kohath was the father of Amram. 59The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed. Amram and Jochebed were the parents of Moses, Aaron and Miriam. 60Aaron was the father of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61Nadab and Abihu died. They gave wrong gifts to the LORD.

62There were 23,000 male Levites who were more than one month old. But Moses did not give any land to them among the Israelites. So he did not put them on the list of the Israelites.

63Those are the men that Moses and Eleazar the priest counted. They counted them on the flat ground in Moab by the Jordan. The place was near Jericho but it was on the other side of the River Jordan. 64Moses did not count any of these men when he counted the people the first time. This happened in the Desert called Sinai. 65That was because the LORD had said about them, ‘They will certainly die in the desert.’ Not one man among them was still alive, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
